What is media-research project “ComebackUA”

ComebackUA is a civil society organization that researches and highlights the phenomenon of forced Ukrainian emigration.

Our mission is to become a central platform for collecting, processing, and sharing comprehensive information about Ukrainian migrants who were forced to leave the country as a result of the full-scale invasion in 2022.

The core focus areas of our project activities include demographic statistics, repatriation strategies, and communication policy.

ComebackUA’s work is aimed at facilitating the return of Ukrainians to their homeland and maintaining the connection of emigrants within the Ukrainian socio-cultural space.

We conduct original research and produce unique, data-driven content.

Problem statement

Ukraine, both as a nation and a state, is facing the challenge of competing with Western countries for the loyalty of its own citizens.

This struggle is unfolding—and being won—in the realms of media activity and in the actions of both civil society and the state aimed at enhancing the country’s appeal. Systematic cooperation between the media and society is essential for effectively preserving Ukrainian identity among the forcibly displaced.

The pressing question is not “How will we recover after the war ends?” but rather “What are we doing now to build the future?”

Media and research activities

We study the phenomenon of forced Ukrainian emigration, focusing on statistical data, the development of Ukrainian communication networks in new environments, the psychological well-being of emigrants, economic and security-related barriers to return, challenges of adaptation, and more.

The unique nature of this situation—where a large number of Ukrainians were abruptly displaced into entirely different living conditions—also creates a unique field for research. The topic of return touches nearly all spheres of everyday life, yet reveals them from entirely new perspectives.

Our content is based on the results of the research we conduct and the data we collect. The goal of our media work is to communicate and analyze findings related to Ukrainian emigration.

CONTENT POLICY

Our content has distinct characteristics:

  • We focus on issues related to forced Ukrainian emigration.
  • Our content is based on research data and analysis of information from open sources.

The topics cover most challenges associated with life in emigration and motivations for return, including:

  • Adaptation challenges and their impact on identity
  • Employment, housing, and entrepreneurship
  • Education
  • Life safety and healthcare, among others.
